Summer Opportunities

Share this:

Summertime means warm sunny days, late nights in the barn preparing for summer shows and for many, no school. Yet even if you aren’t in the classroom every day, there are still chances to learn and grow as individuals. Summer is the perfect time to look for opportunities, whether it be a summer job, an internship or maybe a livestock judging camp. The experience you will gain, and the friendships forged will make the summertime that much sweeter and your future that much brighter.

Summer Work/Internships

Working in the summer is more than just going to a job every day and punching the clock. It’s all about the experience. While making money is always nice, you should look for a summer job or internship that peaks your interest, something that you are passionate about and something that could lead to other opportunities. Internships are all about trial and error. They are a chance to try something new and uncover what you are passionate about and what kind of career you hope to have one day. When it is time to start looking for summer jobs or internships, research companies in the industry you want to be involved in. Check out their websites and investigate to find the right fit for you. Reach out to counselors and school advisors for help with finding a place to learn. Ask close friends, school alumni and mentors for advice and suggestions. Even look to past employees or interns that may have worked for the company to discover if it is the right fit and the right experience for you. You should maximize all the resources at your disposal to find a great learning experience for your summer.

Judging Camps

We all love to show livestock in the ring. The adrenaline you get from leading or driving one is something we all enjoy. But have you ever thought about being on the other side of the animal and serving as the judge? If you judge livestock or have a livestock background, it’s highly plausible that this is a thought that has run through your mind. However, whether or not you ever judge a show, the decision-making and communication skills you gain from livestock judging are incredibly valuable to your life. Taking some time over the summer to strengthen your skills and learn from the best is always a great opportunity.
