Junior Spotlight: Gatlin Goodson

“The harder you work, the luckier you get.” – Gary Player

This quote fits Gatlin Goodson. He serves as a role model for many young showmen in Oklahoma both in the ring and with his work ethic. We are honored to feature him in our Junior Spotlight. – Ryan Jones

Tell us a little about yourself.Goodson

My name is Gatlin Goodson. I am 14 years old and am from Shattuck, Oklahoma. I have two sisters, Cassidy and Allyn. I play football, basketball, and baseball for Shattuck Jr. High. I am a member of the Shattuck FFA where I not only show steers and heifers, but am also on the livestock judging team.

What species do you show and who has influenced you most in your show career?

I show beef cattle. My most influential person in my show career is my mom. She has taught me how to be responsible, dedicated, and that hard work pays off, not only in the showring but in everyday life.

Tell us about the success you have had this year as well as last year.

In the last year, I have been very lucky: I was Third Overall Mainetainer at Tulsa, made the sale at Arizona National, and was reserve in the Lightweight Division and made sale at National Western in Denver. I exhibited the Supreme Heifer at the Ellis County Stock Show. At the Woodward District Stock Show, I showed both the Supreme Heifer and Grand Champion Steer. At the Oklahoma Youth Expo, my heifer was named the Supreme Commercial Heifer.

What is one of your favorite showring moments?

For me, there is no greater thrill than the champion drive. I love the intensity of the Grand Drive and the relief when the judge slaps grands and supremes. It is nearly a tie between my two favorite shows – the Oklahoma Youth Expo and the National Junior Maine Show. I was blessed to be in the ring with awesome heifers at each event.

How has Sure Champ helped you achieve success in the showring?

We feed Sure Champ everyday, twice a day. In my opinion, it puts the bloom on my calves and helps them stay fresh. It is one of my favorite products, and I am very thankful for the support that they provide for youth at livestock shows.

What are your futures plans?

My future plans include attending college at Oklahoma State, I hope on a sports scholarship, and achieve a degree in animal science.

What advice would you give to others that hope to become successful like yourself

Hard work pays off.
