Junior Spotlight: Madison Fischer

Spunk and drive are two easy words that can be used to describe Madison Fischer. The nine-year old from Katy, Texas already has seven years of showing under her belt, and has already found much success. Showing cattle was a natural choice for Madison and her family, who have operated a Red Brangus seed stock operation for over 30 years.

Madison first stepped into the show ring at the age of two for a peewee showmanship contest at the American Red Brangus Junior Nationals. She has come a long way since then, winning multiple shows including Junior Nationals twice. Her love of cattle also extends outside of the show ring, as Madison is involved in all aspects of their program from nutrition to breeding decisions.

What activity to enjoy doing the most?
Showing is my favorite. Even if I had spare time, I would still choose to spend time with my cattle. I would rinse them all day, every day if I could. That is my favorite thing to do in the barn. Cattle are my favorite animal and I have been around them my whole life.

Why do you enjoy showing?
I enjoy showing cattle, because of all the people you meet and the cool places you get to go. It is fun to compete with stiff competition and there is always something to learn.

What does it take to be a good showman?
Practice. I practice every day after school, and on the weekends. The reason why I want to practice so much is because it helps me get better. It is also really important to know the calf. They all act differently. They can either be really crazy or really smart. So, you have to practice to know how to handle them in the right way.

What is your favorite quote?
“Whatever you are, be a good one.”

It is my favorite quote is because it’s true, no matter what you do, you have to do it well.

What is your favorite show?
My favorite show out of the whole U.S. is the National Western Stock Show in Denver. I love it because the competition is really stiff and it is really fun to go to the Yards to look at all the different cows from different countries.

What are some of your goals?
To win the Pen Show at Denver! And to have at least a million cows. I would also like to win San Antonio, Houston and Fort Worth.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to go to Kansas State University, and be a vet to help animals and learn as much about cows as I can!
