Eating Healthy on the Road

While traveling to shows and spending long days in the barn, the last thing on your mind is eating healthy or watching calories. The constant rush from sun up to sun down makes it easy to grab fast food at the fairgrounds, or not even eat at all, which can make you feel worse. Here are some tips to help you snack and eat healthy on the road.

Pack your own healthy snacks or stop at a grocery store once you get to your destination.

Here are a few suggestions that are not only easy to throw in a cooler or tote, but are also easy to eat on the go.

  • String cheese
  • Apple slices
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Fruit, apples, cuties (little oranges) e.t.c.
  • Triscuits/Wheat Thins
  • Pretzels
  • Almonds/mixed nuts
  • Trail mix
  • Beef jerky
  • Pre-cut fruits and veggies (wash and prep at home and throw into Ziploc bags)
  • Yogurt

Drink lots of water.

Staying hydrated is important, especially during the summer heat. Have a case of bottled water at your stalls, or fill up your own reusable water bottles at water fountains at the fairgrounds. Feel like you’re wanting to snack but you just ate? Drink some water first to help curb your hunger.

Don’t forget to eat breakfast.

You’ve probably heard your mom tell you that breakfast is the most important meal in a day – and it’s true! Breakfast helps to give the fuel you need to get through long days. If your hotel offers a complimentary breakfast, choose a high fiber and protein meal, such as whole grain toast with peanut butter, to give you instant energy and fill you up until lunch. This will reduce the temptation to snack in a few hours’ time.

Make smart choices when you can.

Even though it’s great to be prepared with your own options (and will end up saving you money!), there are still healthy choices you can make while eating out.

  • English muffin
  • Plain hamburger

Taco Bell

  • Grilled chicken burrito

  • Grilled chicken sandwich

Jack in the Box

  • Chicken fajita pita

Burger King

  • BK broiler chicken sandwich

  • Original recipe, whole wing with a side of bbq baked beans

  • Light roast turkey deluxe

  • Chargrilled chicken sandwich
